Overview

  • A mix of day and overnight walks combined four wheel driving between places.
  • Local guides on some walks. We do it ourselves on others.
  • A mix of things we've done before and others that we've long wanted to do.
  • Some nights we sleep under the stars; Other nights in fairly luxurious accommodation.
  • Amazing wildlife and desert scenery.
  • A wonderful variety of landscapes: pools, gorges, spectacular cliff top views and more.
  • You also get to experience some of the different Namibian cultures.

Although we've been running trips to southern Africa for more than 20 years, there is still no one else who offers trips like ours.

INTERNATIONAL  11 Aug - xx Sep  2024
Namibia is having a tourist boom. Some of the things we originally hoped to include were booked out months earlier than normal. Others seem to be no problem.  The  Trip Notes will be updated regularly with the latest info.

Here are some of the possibilities.

Windhoek to Waterberg

The trip will begin in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital and only international airport. If possible, our first stop will be the nearby Daan Viljoen National Park where we plan to do the 9 km Rooibos Trail. This will allow us to make sure we have everything we need as many things are not available outside of Windhoek.
Another stop is Waterberg, an amazing moderately sized park most of which is on a plateau which rises about 200 metres above the surrounding plain. There are both day and multi-day walks we can do there.

Etosha, Epupa & More

A visit to Namibia would be almost unthinkable without a visit to Etosha, the best-known game park in Namibia. The relatively arid landscape combined with permanent waterholes make this one of the best places for game viewing in all of Africa. We’ll be toward the end of the dry season so the game should be more concentrated than at other times. Depending on how much is open, we’ll spend two or three days in the park.
From Etosha, we'll drive all the way to the Angolan border to visit Epupa Falls in an area occupied by the Himba people, one of Namibia's minority groups.

Returning south, there are a number of interesting rock art sites that we can visit at or near a place called Twyfelfontein. Good for a number of short walks. We may even do a three day hike on the Brandberg massif and visit the highest point in the country.

Skeleton Coast & Namib Naukluft

We then drive to the coast and the Skeleton Coast National Park where we'll do a day walk or two before spending a night in Swakopmund. With a population of less than 50,000, it's one of the largest towns in the country. Good birdwatching in this general area.
We will visit the Namib Naukluft National Park, home to the world famous Sossusvlei dunes as well as a high plateau where we'll do at least one walk.

Etendeka

This is a guided two day and two night trail where we carry only day packs and enjoy great meals and sleep under the stars. They were almost fully booked when we first enquired. We will book it fi we can. Read the PDF trip notes and click the links to get a better idea of just what it is like.

Having gone all the way to the Angolan border in the north, we now go all the way to the South African border in the south where we visit the Fish River Canyon, starting with the less visited West side followed by the east and the return to Windhoek.

WILDLIFE
African wildlife at its best. Big game in Etosha and some other places. Small animals and birds everywhere.
CLIMATE
A mix of weather can be expected.  Even in its rainy season, Namibia doesn't get much rain but we may get a little. It will almost certainly get quite hot in some places but plateau camps can be chilly.
COOKING
Where we cook, your guide will organise that. If we stay somewhere with a kitchen, you are welcome to assist. Where we eat in restaurants, you need to be prepared to pay for your own meals.

WALK RATING - EASY TO MODERATE

Vegetation

Not a lot. Most of Namibia is desert or semi-desert.

Distance

4-6 hours per day of walking on the longest days.

Pack Weight

Day packs only for most or all of the trip.

Driving

We will hire two 4WD vehicles, probably twin cab utes. Most of the driving will be on gravel roads but there will be some long sections of bitumen and some shorter sections of rough 4WD tracks. We expect the total distance to be something like 3000 km.
