Kakadu & Top End

Kakadu Highlights No. 6

Jul 25 - Aug 7, 2010

Cascades Creek. No trails on any of our walks

Twin Falls Creek: Jul 25-27

Amphitheatre Falls, late dry season

We begin with the long drive from Darwin to Twin Falls where we do a short walk to a campsite above the falls. The following day we leave our packs and do a day walk up to another falls ahd huge pool. We finish by returning to the cars and driving to Jim Jim.

Into the pool, upper Twin Falls Creek Wet crossing, Twin Falls Creek

Jim Jim & Rainforest Gorge: Jul 27 - Aug 1

Relaxing at Jim Jim Creek

Although Jim Jim Falls isn't normally flowing much at this time of year, there are still beautiful pools such as the one at left where we can camp. Nearby we have a creek which flows well after its more famous neighbor has stopped. The walking is rugged, but the rainforest gorge is shady and filled with monsoon forest. This section finishes with a night at Cooinda and a Yellow Waters wetlands cruise.

Rainforest Gorge Falls, late dry season Yet another swim

Graveside Area: Jul 31 - Aug 7

This section overlaps the first with the night at Cooinda and the Yellow Waters Cruise.

Relaxing by the pool

The Graveside area contains the greatest concentration of permanently flowing creeks we have found in Kakadu. You walk through deep gorges and, if you wish, you can take advantage of the nicest natural waterslide we have found.

Waterslide Walking through a Kakadu Gorge

Terrain and difficulty. The first and third sections are among the most leisurely trips we offer in Kakadu. The schedule allows most groups to get into camp early or have long breaks during the day.

The walk down the rainforest gorge includes scrambles over boulders. some of which are the size of small houses. Some of those who have done it have thought it was the hardest thing they had ever done. Those who begin with this section without the advantage of having done the previous sections, find it harder than those who have done the first section. We can, however, modify the route by returning to Jim Jim Creek if some members of the group are not up to the walk down the gorge.

To take part you need good fitness and a sense of adventure.

Your rewards are waterfalls, wildflowers and an incredible Kakadu wilderness experience no other operator can offer you.
