How to get to our departure points

Note the new discount flights from Singapore with Tiger Airlines. Also note the Qantas discount offers for international visitors. If you are coming to Australia from overseas, getting to Darwin is cheaper than ever.

We have four main departure points. All are served by daily air and bus connections from elsewhere in Australia. Darwin is also served by direct flights from overseas.

Darwin

Domestic Flights

Qantas flies to Darwin from all over Australia. Bookings made over their website may get a discount. Fares are continually changing so it's worth checking regularly.

Jetstar, a Qantas subsidiary, flies to Darwin from Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide.

Virgin Australia flies to Darwin from all over Australia. As with Qantas, booking over the web may get you a discount.

From April 2012, Virgin will also offer direct flights from Sydney to Darwin. The press release here gives information about new international connections as well.

Air North offers a limited number of flights direct from the Gold Coast via Mount Isa as well as direct flights from Townsville, Kununurra and Broome.

Skywest has a few flights from Perth, Broome and Kununurra. Their Fokker 100 has the best economy seat leg room of any aircraft flying domestically in Australia.

International Flights

Qantas flies to Darwin from Denpasar (Bali) and Singapore. Royal Brunei flies in from Brunei. Garuda flies in from Denpasar. Tiger Airlines oflies in from Singapore. All offer extensive connections from other places. In addition to the four main airlines, Air North flies to Darwin from Dili in East Timor.

The links below show the route maps for the different international airlines. These pages can get you to the flight schedules and other information you may need to make a booking.

Silk Air, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, now offers direct flights between Singapore and Darwin. They have good connections throughout southeast Asia as well as anywhere that Singapore Airlines flies. That's a new alternative for people coming from Europe.

Jetstar has taken over all the Qantas routes from Darwin to Asia.

Air North is a regional airline. Dili is their only international destination.

Buses take a long time to get to Darwin from anywhere. It's about 10 hours from Kununurra, 20 hours from Alice Springs and two or more days from any southern capital.

Bus and Rail

Greyhound is now the only bus company with services to any of our destinations. As with the airlines, you may get a discount for booking over the web.

You can now get to Darwin by train.
The Ghan runs from Adelaide to Alice Springs and Darwin, frequency depends on season. It connects with trains from other parts of Australia so train buffs can make it a great journey from most of the country.

Kununurra

Flights

Air North offers the only flights to Kununurra from Darwin. They also fly from Broome. Air North is tied in with the Qantas reservation system and can be booked direct or with Qantas. Their largest aircraft is a 74 seater, but they have only one of these. Their next largest is 30 seats so it pays to get in early with your booking.

Limited baggage allowance. Regional Link has a baggage allowance of only 13 kg. If space is available, they will carry 20 kg without an extra charge but, if the plane is full and you have more than 13 kg, some of your baggage might not go with you unless special arrangements have been made. (To date we haven't had a problem with up to 20 kg.)

Bus

Given the limited baggage allowance on Air North, you might want to consider taking a bus to Kununurra from Darwin or Broome. It's about 10 hours from Darwin and 14 hours from Broome.

Alice Springs

Flights

Qantas flies to Alice Springs from all over Australia. Bookings made over their website may get a discount. Fares are continually changing so it's worth checking regularly.

Bus and Rail

Buses take a long time to get to Alice Springs from anywhere. It's about 20 hours from Darwin or Adelaide, a day and a half from Melbourne and two or more days from any other southern capital.

Greyhound offers daily services to Alice Springs from a variety of locations. As with the airlines, you may get a discount for booking over the web.

Tom Price

Flights

There are no direct flights to Tom Price, however, a direct jet service operated by Qantaslink flies from Perth daily to Paraburdoo, from where a connecting shuttle bus transports you the remaining 80 kilometres to Tom Price. Fares are continually changing so it's worth checking regularly.
